Battle tactics Empty Battle tactics

Post  Vypra Tue Feb 16, 2010 2:09 pm

After recent events, the Heritage has been almost forced into the position of offically particpating in some military action.

So, it would seem appropriate to have some rp events on training some of the younger/ inexperience members about troll battle tactics and strategies....However, i'm not sure exactly their style would be.

There's some info on wow-wiki regarding gorilla stlye manouvers with some voodoo thrown in but what would a training session look like?

any ideas?

Well, I suggest some scouting missions in STV. Split up in two groups. one the ambusher and the other the ambushe (Victims). If you remember the overlooking spots i shoved you in our Region, we could use them to practice suprise attacks.

When attacking a column. be patient and wait for the right moment. Strike the first and the last, to block the enemies routs of escape. Typical troll tactic would be to shover the enemy with Spears, arrows, spells and shrunken heads to cause panic. (preferable a quick rout, wich is easy to maw down)

Remember trolls are typically outmumbered. so they prefer gorilla tactic where you encircle a foe (Hanibal at Canne).

Always strike from the shadows, and quickly disapear without a trace. you don't need to vipe the enemy at first strike. I think Trolls would prefer to strike the enemy several times during a long Period span. Maximum Damage, minimum losses

I would guess a good tac was, that classes who can't make a quick get away should get away frist, while rouges, hunters mages, for instace, distracts the enemy, then Blink, Spring/vanish, and disengage+aspect of chetah out of there. Use the Spirit link, never loos seight of the enemy Wink

Gorilla... *giggle* Guerilla, maybe?

And I think this could be fun. Both doing exercises like the one described and perhaps practising dueling and things like that. (Loa knows I could use some pvp skills.. >.< )

Gorilla tactics. Very Happy Such an easy mistake. (Basics of gorilla tactics: snarl at your opponent, stand on your hind legs, beat your chest, get back on all fours and charge! Wink Wouldn't be pretty wise for trolls to attack like that, though.)
("Shoved" instead of "showed" is another funny typo in Gen'jin's post...)

On a serious note, I think training sessions are a good idea! Perhaps it will be a good task for the newly elected Bloodlord and Hexlord to lead these trainings for their subordinates.

((Here's a little something I wrote a few years ago. It's not exactly 'tactics' per say, but fighting styles.
It was just something I thought would be fun to play with. It is warrior-centric, as I played a warrior before switching to my priest.
Though, nothing says you can't take it and adapt it to a different class.

It was written before The Burning Crusade, so it definitely is a little outdated now. With the addition of Titan's Grip, Bladestorm and other fun warrior talents, if I was still playing my warrior character I would revisit this. If you so choose, feel free to take it and modernize it and "Heritage-ize" it.

Unfortunately, the ones I wrote for Darkspear (scorpion, raptor, boar) and for Revantusk (wolf, eagle, turtle) are gone.
When I changed machines, I missed a few files that I wish I hadn't. They were similar enough though. Just slightly different made up lore behind them.

Very Happy It is NOT Blizzard canon. Right... that's the disclaimer, enjoy!))
-----------------------------------------------

Fighting Styles of the Frostmane as taught by Master Snowstrider Ali'tuktuk.
The Frostmane who trained under Ali'tuktuk learned three different styles. Each style has distinct characteristics that distinguish them from each other. The styles, while fundamentally different, do share several of the same strikes and movements. Many warriors choose to specialise in one main style. Others choose to balance their training, not excelling at any particular style but maximising the basics of each style.

Dance of the Snow Leopard
A highly aggressive style that usually incorporates two weapons. It creates many openings for the warrior to be struck, however if the movements are perfected the warrior will kill or knock out the opponent before there is a chance to retaliate. It is often described as careless, but anyone who has mastered the style or has even studied it for a short while will tell you otherwise.

March of the Ice Claw Bear
Like a bear, offense and defense are relatively balanced. The attacks are somewhat slower and harder than those of the Leopard's Dance. The warrior who marches to the bear's call will often utilize many different roars to raise the morale of his allies or intimidate his enemies. These warriors are most often seen with larger weapons (two-handers), but some use shields and others prefer double wielding (one-handers).

Charge of the Crag Boar
A more defensive warrior may choose to master this style. Not necessarily named for the physical aspects of the boar, rather its stubborn nature because a warrior who uses this style simply refuses to give any ground to his enemies. In a group, a boar-warrior usually chooses to be the brunt of his opponents' attacks while his partners attack the opponent.

Techniques of the Frostmane as taught by Master Snowstrider Ali'tuktuk.
Stubborn Shield
The warrior buckles down, shield in hand. He relaxes for a split second, quietly (or loudly in some cases) asks the Loas for assistance. His muscles, particularly the shield arm and shoulder, tense. For a few fleeting moments, the warrior becomes near invincible. He, and by extension his shield becomes like steel and attacks cannot harm him. The footwork of this technique is somewhat unique, in that they are planted in the ground as opposed to dancing to the invisible beat that is normally seen in Troll combat.

Dance of Death
The warrior under siege by many enemies may employ this technique. As its name implies, it is a fluid dance. If an enemy attacks, no matter what direction it is from, it is countered. It is almost as if he has grown eight arms to defend himself.

Onslaught of the Blizzard
An enemy caught offguard by this technique is akin to being trapped by a blizzard. The warrior concentrates all his attacks on one specific point on one opponent. The attack is not terribly long, but when it is over the opponent is significantly weakened, if not dead. The one drawback of the Onslaught is that it is so physically demanding that during the attack and immediately after, the warrior is extremely succeptible to injury. It is a kill or be killed technique.

Boiling Blood
This is not necessarily only a warrior's ability. All Trolls have the potential to utilize it. The Jungle Trolls and Forest Trolls call it Beserking. The Ice Trolls of Frostmane Tribe who were taught under Ali'tuktuk know it as the Boiling Blood (as well as Beserking). The Blood of the Troll boils and the result is an extremely angry Troll. If this ability is used (voluntarily or involuntarily) the Troll's attacks become swifter significantly more powerful. Similarly to the Onslaught of the Blizzard, Boling Blood is also very physical and often results in a kill or be killed situation.
-- Some Trolls can call this at will. In others it triggers randomly. Some can only use it when extremely angry. Boiling Blood or Beserking is extremely circumstantial.

Special Techniques
Each style has a technique that can only be achieved by a warrior focusing most of their training into one style. It is currently impossible to achieve two of these techniques simultaneously. One must make a decision to be balanced or to choose a style they wish to master fully. Each of these techniques takes the name of its style's animal (some even interchange the style and unique technique name).

Raging Bear
The name is for more than obvious reasons. A single swipe of a weapon that wreaks havoc on the opponent. More often than not, it wounds them so grievously that the opponent cannot even be healed effectively. Those taught by Ali'tuktuk perform an upwards strike from the belly to the neck. Other teachers may vary their interpretation of the style.

Hungry Leopard
It is a more technical strike than the Raging Bear. It is less powerful but if it's successfully landed, the warrior will be empowered and feels the spirits coarsing through his veins. This revitalises the warrior while he continues his barrage on the opponent. The spirits feeding the warrior strength is where this technique gets its name.

Defiant Boar
Originally it was named this solely because of the boar style. However, as time passes and the use of spikes on shields are more apparent, some mistake the meaning as derived from the spikes resembling boar's tusks ripping through the flesh of the opponent. It is a strong slamming of the shield into the opponent's chest or face.

----------------------------------
OOC stuff
Here are the in game equivalents of said techniques/styles

Dance of the Snow Leopard - More Fury Focused - Hungry Leopard - Bloodthirst
March of the Ice Claw Bear - More Arms Focused - Raging Bear - Mortal Strike
Charge of the Crag Boar - More Protection Focused - Defiant Boar - Shield Slam

Stubborn Shield - Shield Wall
Dance of Death - Retaliation
Onslaught of the Blizzard - Recklessness

Boiling Blood - Beserking

As for the training part .. Trolls don have al 10 classes Wink so how about using peps other chars to simulate "conjured foes" to train on.
I can come on Lemhan (warlock) or Garchag (Feral/pvp resto drud) but IC it will be a ... whatever to train on, and not the actual chars.

Conjured foes? Like, you mean, an illusion summoned by a mage? Or some warlock/druid spirit being summoned by a shaman? Sounds interesting.

Troll Combat
Trolls are anchored in their primal traditions. Whether it is Courting, Mating, Praying, Hunting and so forth, there is a unique spin that Trolls put on them. Combat is no exception.

The beat of the drums pulsates through the mothers' bodies and thus through the babies in the womb. Those babies are born hearing the drums. As they grow up, they live day and night hearing the beats, save for a few hours of rest for the drummers.

It is no surprise that when first training, the young (usually between 6 and 10, sometimes even younger) Trolls train to a series of drum beats further instilling a rhythm into their movements on the battlefield. They start off learning to a slow beat then as they advance, the pace picks up. After a few months, the Trolls no longer need the drums as the rhythm has embedded itself into their spirits. Of course, the drums are always a welcome addition due to the extra adrenaline the beat provides (nothing quite like a warband of Trolls all fighting fluidly to the beat).

As a result, nearly every movement from swinging a club to advancing on an enemy to blocking is done with a dance-like feel to it.
Watching Trolls in combat is a beautiful yet deadly thing.
