Troll timeline

Post  Ryleen on Tue Apr 21, 2009 7:29 pm

I have this pet project of making a beginner's guide to troll rp. This is part of it, a tool for when you're trying to figure out your background story. Many of these numbers are guessed, and pieced together from many vague sources. Recent troll history is sketchy at best, and I've done what I could with the material I could find.

~1000 years ago
The Darkspears were driven from the Gurubashi Empire and their home in Stranglethorn Vale. They ended up on what became the Darkspear Islands, a cluster of small islands south of the maelstrom

Humans arrive to the Darkspear Islands and start to cause trouble. At the same time, the murlocs of the island who used to be docile and no threat were driven crazy by the Sea Witch they worshipped.
Thrall and his horde appeared and promised to save them from the humans. The murlocs interefered and kidnapped them all, troll, orc and human alike.
Thrall rescued many orcs and trolls. The Darkspear leader Sen'Jin was lost.
Vol'Jin, Sen'Jin's apprentice became the new leader of the Darkspears and swore allegiance to the Horde.
Some trolls left with the orcs, but Vol'Jin and most of the surviving tribe stayed on the islands for another year before following to Kalimdor.

Vol'Jin and most of the remaining Darkspears bring what resources they have gathered and follows the Horde to Kalimdor. They settle on the Echo Isles.

The Darkspears are settling in on the new islands, work on erecting stone buildings instead of huts have started and are in good progress.
A force of humans established a base at the coast of Kalimdor. Thrall sends Rexxar to the Echo Isles, to convince the inhabitant Darkspear trolls to flee for the fleet of the humans.
When the humans have been defeated the Darkspears return, only to be betrayed by one of their own; Zalazane. Using dark magic to make other trolls his voodoo slaves, he leaves Vol'Jin no other choice but to leave the islands with the remainder of the tribe.
Sen'Jin Village is founded on the coast of Durotar.

Part of the Darkspear tribe travels towards the west coast of Kalimdor. Shadowprey Village is founded. In Stonetalon mountains, in the middle between Shadowprey Village and Sen'Jin Village, Malaka'Jin is built. The name seems to be taken from a Darkspear leader of the past.

Founding of Zabra'jin in Zangarmarsh. The name seems to be taken from a Darkspear leader of the past.

I guess this is before WoW was released so it would make more along the lines of x+4-5 years ago?

No. That is included in the timeline. Ic, one year passed between the release of wow and the release of tbc, and another year before wtlk. They could not have ventured to Outland to create Zabra'Jin before tbc.

EDIT: Just to be clear, I made it myself and tried to make it as possible/realistic as possible, I didn't just copy it from somewhere.

But I think it feels silly that it is only a year ago that zabrajin was founded when we have played there for over 2 years.

Yeah, WoW started in 2004, but lore-wise only 2 years have passed despite the actual almost 5 years... that's silly I think, but Blizzard says it that way...
Anyway, I think Ryleen has done a very good research when writing this timeline. Smile
And it's going to be useful for our guild members to create their backstory.

Remember, the Orges are orginally from Dreanor/outland, and came to Azeroth with the orcs.

The only explanation i can come up with for this is that a year on Azeroth is around twice as long as our years Razz

Hmm...i see what you mean. According to Ry's timeline, the Darkspear were exiled to their islands a very long time ago (i didn't realise it that myself and always assumed it was more recent) but the Orcs and Ogres only came through the dark portal around 30 years ago...

I'm a bit confused about the ogres.. Where did they enter the picture?

Anyway, according to all my sources the Darkspears were driven out of STV during the turmoil preceeding the fall of the Gurubashi Empire. Had the Darkspears been living in Stranglethorn after the fall of the empire, it would seem likely that they would have been wiped out by stronger and larger tribes.

Well, the quest log that Gen'jin posted says that a troll knew an ogre mage from the time the Darkspears lived in Stranglethorn.
Ogres arrived through the Dark Portal about 30 years ago, which means, according to this source, the Darkspears left Stranglethorn less than 30 years ago. Which of course means that those who play aged Darkspears must have been born in Stranglethorn.

One would think that something as important as a timeline would actually be plastered across the office walls with BIG BOLD CAPTIONS for everything as important as first contact between species, though.

One would think so, but no... Smile

(( On a side note.. We all love to bash Blizz over all their silly mistakes, but overall they've created a very detailed and complex setting for us to play with. Mistakes aside, there's still lots and lots left that actually works. Smile Any other generic mmo would probably have given us "You are trolls! You can play these classes!" and be happy with that. ))

Re: Troll timeline

Post  Zanick on Wed Apr 29, 2009 10:18 pm

Just to add my two copper's worth to this discussion:

I've always assumed that in the quest 'The Mind's Eye', Witch Doctor Kin'weelay is simply mistaken. Or perhaps he believes that some ancient evil spirit, that was known in Stranglethorn when the Darkspears were there, has now taken over control of the ogre Mai'Zoth. You can't always take the words of a troll witch doctor as literal truth. They see things the rest of us don't see. They think in strange ways . . .

I have always believed that the Darkspears left the shores of Stranglethorn many many generations ago. Certainly long before the first ogre set foot on Azeroth soil.

From what I have read, the ancient history of the Darkspears probably runs like this:

10,000 years before the present time, the land was ripped apart by the Sundering caused by the War of the Ancients (although I doubt that we trolls know much about this, except the troll legend about how the great waves drowned the city of I'lalai. - Could this be where we now see the underwater ruins of the Vile Reef?)

There followed centuries of famine and terror. Eventually the Gurubashi trolls called upon the aid of Hakkar the Soulflayer. [Some sources say this happened 'More than a thousand years ago . .", but it may have been longer.] When the strongest tribes rose up against Hakkar's priests there was a terrible war that caused the fall of the Gurubashi Empire. After that, the various jungle troll tribes claimed their own territories within their ruined homeland.

After the last vestiges of the old empire had crumbled away, the jungle trolls in Stranglethorn were tribes fighting amongst themselves. Probably after many many years of struggling against the larger stronger Bloodscalp and Skullsplitter tribes, the Darkspears were eventually driven out of the Vale and made their way to the Broken Isles. [Some sources say the Darkspears were only driven out "in recent times".] They lived there at least long enough for many to refer to them as 'island trolls'.

So, the fall of the Gurubashi Empire may have occurred only a thousand years ago, or it may have been a lot earlier. And the Darkspears may have left Stranglethorn a few centuries or even only a few decades ago, or it may have been hundreds of years earlier. We can't be sure. There is a HUGE margin of uncertainty. Probably they were too busy fighting for survival during this time to preserve these details of their ancient tribal history. Although the Zandalari probably know the truth of it . . .

Does anyone else have any other ideas?

All the articles I found on wowwiki claims that the darkspears were driven out before the empire fell, during the rebellions and general turmoil that eventually led up to it ending.
