Searching for the loa

Post  Ryleen on Wed Mar 25, 2009 6:49 pm

Ryleen lay on her back in the sunlight, watching the clouds passing by over her. It was another beautiful day on her little island in the sky. The rough bark of the thick root she was lying on was not as comfortable as the grass may be, but after discovering the surprising number of annoying little bugs that lived in the grass, she preferred it up here. She could hear the buzzing of some of them from here. Together with the breeze, it was a soothing sound. She could almost fall asleep here... That is, until the calm was broken by another rumble from her empty stomach.

What was so great about fasting anyway? She couldn't even remembered the last time she felt hungry. At the age of ten, she had mastered creating matter that at least passed as edible with her magic, and she had worked since on perfecting that skill. Food had never been further away than a magic word and a snap of her fingers. And it still wasn't. But she wasn't allowed to... Two nights and almost two days with nothing but water. At least that was allowed. But on the other hand, she'd probably pass out long before she had a vision, was she not allowed to drink water either. But still, two full days. Why had she left immediately after talking to Vypra? She could have slept at home one more night, had a steady breakfast and then left... But no. Stupid...

With a sigh she sat up to take another drink of conjured water. Her second day, and still no vision. But she was probably doing it wrong. Most of yesterday had been spent thinking about all the things she left back home. Her problems, her friends, her projects. When would the baby start breathing fire? How would she best deal with that? About Gando.. Would he have gotten her letter by now? When was he coming home? Was he coming home? All the same worries all over again. She was probably supposed to leave all that behind, not think about anything and let the loa speak to her, or something...

Today had been boring. There was nothing to do on the little island floating high above Nagrand. Well, except watching things. She had spent an hour or two following a herd of talbuks far below, as they wandered the plains while grazing. A few hours working on one of her diagrams for a new spell, sketching it out in the dirt. She probably shouldn't have done that. And now, she was watching the clouds instead. She wasn't sure what she was supposed to do. She had never meditated before in her life. She was probably doing it all wrong...

That was a really unpleasant though. The gnawing fear that she wouldn't recieve a vision at all was constantly there, in the back of her head. How long should she stay? When was the point when she would have to admit that she wasn't going to get a vision and should go home? No... She couldn't think like that. She shouldn't. She got to her feet and was about to wander off to the other side of the island to look down at the village. But she barely got to her feet before she stumbled and almost fell, having to grab the root to keep herself on her feet. Everything went black before her eyes and the world swirled around her. Was this it? But a few seconds later her vision returned and she felt steady again. No, that was no vision from the loa, it was just her not eating for a few days and rising to her feet too fast.

This was going to be more difficult than she had ever expected it to be.

Ryleen woke up early. The early morning sun blinded her for a few moments as she sat up an looked around. Hungry. That was the very first thought crossing her mind. With a snap of her fingers, she created some bread, warm and smelling like it just came out of the oven. Then she remembered that she shouldn't, and with an annoyed mutter she threw the bread over the edge of the island.

For a second, she was tempted to cheat and actually eat something. Who would know? But on the other hand, it would probably make this take even more time.

Still.. Hadn't she already cheated? Of course, she had no way to know that Graan spent his evenings on floating islands in Nagrand. But she had allowed him to stay and talk to her for a while. It was probably not allowed... She was supposed to be all alone until the loa spoke to her, wasn't she? Oh well, that would probably mean that whatever loa chose her would be kind and forgiving, or something...

She grumbled to herself and got to her feet. With a short spell she created a bowl of water and splashed some of it in her face. Her mood was absolutely horrible. She hadn't slept well, she was hungry and she was bored. Graan had said that the hunger would be bad for the first four days, then it would get better. Four days... This was just the third! Why had she ever agreed to do this?

Ryleen lay on her back on the big root again. The fourth day... Graan had been right, the hunger wasn't as bad now. Still not good though, and she felt weak. As soon as she stood up things went black and she felt dizzy. It always passed after a few moments though.

She closed her eyes, concentrating on the feeling of the sunlight touching her face. Doing nothing was getting a bit easier. Perhaps because she felt tired and weak. Had there been a book she would have had problem focusing enough to study it, most likely. This was easier. Just resting and not really thinking about anything, almost like sleeping.

She wasn't sure how much time had passed. Perhaps she had fallen asleep? There was no sunlight on her face anymore. In fact, she felt cold. Cold enough to tremble. Was that snowflakes? She opened her eyes and sat up. Sat up too fast, everything turned black.

Or did it? After waiting a while, she realised that the darkness was real. Looking up, she could see something vague that might be faint stars. But around her she could see nothing but blackness. She lifted one hand to cast a spell to create some light, but nothing happened. She tried once more, but still with no effect.

Then there was light. Suddenly a fire sprung up in front of her. She was no longer sitting on the tree root on the floating island, but on the ground, on plain dirt without grass. The firelight only reached a few feet, after that the darkness seemed almost physical. The fire on the other hand was bright, bright enough that she couldn't look straight at it. There was no sound beside the crackling of the fire.

She tried to get to her feet, but found that she couldn't move a limb. The heat from the flames felt like it was strong enough to scorch her fur off, while her back felt like covered with frost. Then there was another sound, a voice. It came from the other side of the fire, where the light was bright enough to hide who was talking.

"I have waited for you, little mage."

She tried to open her mouth to speak, but found that she still couldn't move. But the voice answered.

"I am the one who chose you.
I am the mother and the queen.
I am death."

She felt a strange tingling sensation in her still paralysed limbs. Glancing down, she could see a horde of black and brown spiders crawling across her legs and up her arms. For a moment, she was thankful that she couldn't move, or she would surely have panicked while trying to get away from the spiders. The voice spoke again.

"Know that you belong to me now, Ryleen."

She wanted to try to speak, to ask questions, to ask for the spiders to get off her, but she still couldn't. As soon as the voice went silent again, the fire disappeared, along with the spiders and the faint stars, leaving her paralysed in total darkness.

A unnknown period of time later, she woke up, finding herself back on the floating island. There were real stars above her now, it was a real night. This must mean that she was allowed to go home. If that wasn't a vision, she had no idea what was.
