Zandalari Lore Empty Zandalari Lore

Post  Zanick Thu Jan 08, 2009 12:24 am

I have spent many long evenings talking to the Zandalari trolls on Yojamba Isle. They are cautious not to reveal too much about their tribe. But from what they have told me, and from what little I learned from Warlord Snicka about his experiences on Zandalar before he went missing, I have gathered quite a few notes about the Zandalari.

I present these notes here in the hope that they will help us all to get a better understanding of the true heritage of the trolls, a heritage that the Zandalar Tribe has preserved for so long. I hope that this knowledge will serve us all well in the long days and nights to come.

STATUS
Zandalari trolls show their status and power by the clothes or armour that they wear. Their clothes are made from the finest of materials, and interwoven with the mojo they use to make themselves powerful. The ultimate symbol of power in the tribe is a Zandalari troll’s battle gear.

HUNTERS
Zandalari hunters are known as Predators. They hunt prey to provide sustenance for the tribe. A Predator's most cherished clothing is the mantle they wear. It helps to hide them from view... and to make their presence known when they wish it.

ROGUES
Amongst the Zandalari there are rogues known as Madcaps. Above all else they embrace madness... chaos... the unpredictability of existence. They sow the seeds of confusion and mayhem amongst the tribe's enemies. A Madcap's most prized clothing is their mantle, which is a sign of their place in the tribe.

KHAR'VAXAL
One of Zandalar's legendary madcaps was Khar'vaxal the Cracked. Legend states that when facing the enemies of the tribe for the first time, Khar'vaxal used his mantle specifically woven with "the weave of madness". His form was shrouded not only by the mantle, but also with the blinding speed of his twin daggers. The legend of Khar'vaxal the Cracked serves as a reminder that no foe - no matter how great a threat they may be - is impossible to overcome. Chaos will bring everyone to their knees.

RENATAKI
You might hear a Zandalari rogue calling upon the aid of Renataki when performing some trickery. Zandalari hunters sometimes call Renataki's name when attempting to control beasts. Renataki was a legendary rogue known as Renataki of the Thousand Blades. He was famous for using madness to bring pain and fear to his enemies.

MAGES
Zandalari mages are known as Illusionists. They employ powerful mojo in their incantations, to confuse the tribe's enemies. The Zandalari believe that magic is a raw, primal force to be shaped by those strong enough to do it. Mojo is an extension of this power. One powerful manipulation of mojo is in the form of illusion. The Zandalari know the power of this form of magic and illusionists hold a honoured place within the tribe.

Illusionists' robes are said to embody the essence of illusion in their look. Legend states that their ancient robes never look the same twice.

KAJARO
You might hear a Zandalari illusionist calling upon the power of Kajaro. Mount Kajaro is the most recognizable mountain (although it's actually a volcano) on the island of Kezan, and is a landmark for ships and flying travellers. The Isle of Kezan (sometimes spelled "Kazan") is a tropical island in the South Seas. It was once inhabited by trolls but it is now the homeland of the Goblins. The goblin's capital city, Undermine, is said to be located beneath the island. Mount Kajaro symbolises a powerful source of magical power.

PRIESTS
Zandalari priests are more than just healers - they are Confessors. Evil comes both from outside threats - such as Hakkar - and from within the tribe. Confessors act as the judges, preserving the tribe from the same evil that devoured the Gurubashi from within. Shortly after the fall of the Gurubashi, the Zandalari almost succumbed to a final defeat from evil within the tribe. It was then that the Confessors amongst them arose, preserving the tribe by banishing those who would destroy their own kind. They not only keep the tribe in tune with the spirits, but they also preserve the flesh.

The Confessors of the Zandalar all wear a distinctive mantle, marking them as the preservers of the tribe. These mantles are woven with powerful mojo that aids them in judging those who would threaten the tribe.

ZULDAZAR
Zandalari priests often call upon the power of Zuldazar to aid them in their judgement. Zuldazar is the capital city of Zandalar. Zuldazar is built in a series of giant ziggurats that look like a towering mountain from a distance. It is the home of King Rastakhan and the most powerful and wise Zandalari priests and lore-keepers. It is therefore a symbol of wisdom.

WARLOCKS
Amongst the Zandalari, there are warlocks called Demoniacs. Through an ancient and arcane ritual, they allow a demon to enter their being. Rather than let it possess them, though, they enslave the demon from the inside, absorbing the power of the beast for their own command. The demoniac seeks to embody power outright, not just possess it. It is a feat few are ever able to master.

A demoniac's robes have fused fine runecloth and devastatingly powerful mojo into a single fabric. The look of the robe is said to instil fear into the minds of all who see it... especially the demons that the demoniac will eventually dominate.

HAZZA'RAH
Zandalari priests may call upon Hazza'rah to aid them with their healing. Hazza'rah is also invoked by Zandalari mages to give extra power to their magic and by Zandalari warlocks to make their spells more destructive. Hazza'rah was a legendary Zandalari illusionist.

WARRIORS
Zandalari warriors are called Vindicators. Vengeance is power. The Zandalar Vindicator is such power. The tribe has many enemies. The Zandalar Vindicators exact retribution on them. No crime against the tribe goes unpunished. The Vindicators deliver this punishment.

The Vindicator's symbol of power is the breastplate. It is forged with powerful mojo and is the Zandalar symbol of vengeance.

MUGAMBA
You might hear a Zandalari warrior calling upon the power of Mugamba to give them strength. Mount Mugamba is the highest mountain on the island of Zandalar. Mount Muganba symbolises strength and might.

GRI'LEK
Zandalari warriors might also swear by the might of Gri'lek. Gri'lek was a legendary warrior hero, a berserker. His tale is told in the ancient troll chronicle 'The Tale of Gri'lek the Wanderer' (the second of the Troll Legends). The end of this tale tells how Gri'lek wandered the jungle lands cursing the spirits for the loss of his right arm.

DRUIDS
The Zandalari have no druids. Like most trolls they believe that nature is to be shaped by their need, not the other way around. But they have special priests called 'haruspices' who are a key members of the tribe. By communion with animals and sacrificing them to the spirits when needed, a Haruspex gives the tribe divine guidance. They can foretell future events and discover unknown things. In times past, the haruspex's insight and wisdom gave the Zandalari an edge in the wars against the splintered tribes of the Gurubashi.

The ultimate symbol of a haruspex's power is what they wear. Their tunic symbolizes the connection between themselves and the divine wisdom they seek. Parts of the beasts they sacrifice are often woven into the tunic to remind them of the connection they have to their gifts.

SHAMANS
Some shamans within the Zandalar tribe are revered for their gifts of divine sight. These Augurs spend their time casting bones or reading the leaves for insight. They do not hex people like witch doctors.

Augurs know the mojo of the elements. They use it as a means to guide the tribe to glory. In the dark days after the Gurubashi Empire ripped itself up, the Zandalari augurs led the tribe to a safe haven in the South Seas. They also led some of the tribe back to Stranglethorn Vale, to fight the evil brewing in Zul'Gurub.

The augurs of the Zandalar all wear a distinctive chest piece called a hauberk. It is fitted with the finest of silks and cloths, interwoven with strong chain. It is a symbol of not only their divinity, but also of their authority.

VOODRESS
You might hear Zandalari shamans call upon Voodress to aid them in their divinations. Voodress Village is the last troll holdout on the goblin Isle of Kezan.

WU'SHOOLAY
Zandalari haruspices call upon the name of Wu'shoolay to help them harness the power of nature. Similarly, Zandalari shamans may call upon Wu'shoolay to help them speak with the spirits. Wu'shoolay the Storm Witch was a legendary Zandalari shaman who could harness the power of lightning to destroy the tribe's enemies.

PALADINS
Those who have different beliefs to the Zandalari are considered heathens. But heathens can have a place in the tribe. The Zandalari acknowledge those heathens who do not fear oppression and who are willing to die for what they believe in. The Zandalar tribe call them Freethinkers.

The Ancient Zandalari were once branded as heretics and heathens. This was when the Gurubashi Empire was strong. These heathens dared to challenge the priests of Hakkar. All heathens were hunted and killed as vermin by the Gurubashi. Those heathens never wavered in their fight against the Blood God. Today the Zandalari honour the price they paid.

(( Actually there's not much of my own creation here. It's all genuine lore, although I've just made one or two minor assumptions here and there. But if anyone thinks I've made a mistake or gone too far then please let me know by posting here.))

(( It's from several sources, Chabat. Most of it is from the text of the various Quests given by the Zandalari trolls on Yojamba Isle. The details of some of the legendary troll heroes come from descriptions of the bosses to be faced in the Edge of Madness event in Zul'Gurub. The minor details about places on Zandalar and Kezan come from wowwiki.))
