Tribal roles

Post  Snicka on Sun Oct 14, 2007 4:21 pm

Here's an incomplete list of the roles most commonly found in troll tribes, accompanied with the character class closest to it. Which suits you the most?

Barbarian - A fierce troll fighter. Hunter, rogue or warrior.
Beastmaster - Able to talk to beasts and turn them against his enemies. Hunter.
Berserker - Savage fighter who can focus his rage against his enemies. Warrior or rogue.
Headhunter - Collector of pieces of slain enemies. Hunter, rogue or warrior.
Hexer - Voodoo master focusing his magic to harm his enemies. Mage, priest or shaman.
High Priest - A faithful devoter of the Loa. Priest, obviously.
Potion doc - Master of alchemy. Mage, priest or shaman (or any class with alchemy skill).
Primal - Insane and bestial fighter, often taking on the aspect of an animal. Warrior, rogue or hunter (though if there were troll druids, they would surely be Primals.
Shadow hunter - Both talented in voodoo and combat. Shaman or hunter (though actually the combination of the two classes).
Stalker - Able to move silently and unseen. Rogue or hunter.
Trapper - Expert in setting up traps and ambushing his enemies. Hunter or rogue.
Witch doctor - Voodoo master who uses his magic to heal and protect his allies. Shaman or priest.

So little choice for a mage. But then again, it's not like Ry is trying to be either of them anyway.

- a small note has been attached to the front of some ammendments made to the records -

I've been given some books that were part of a study of troll society. I've added them to our records as it may be of interest to the guild how others perceive us, especially as we are seeking to find out if our magic has had a negative effect on our Sin'dori emmisary - Chabat

- The Witch Doctor

The witch doctor is an alchemical master, skilled at not only simply brewing potions and alchemical goods, but at awakening the spirits of the ingredients that go into her goods. A witch doctor at work can be unsettling, for she croons and chants to the herbs and animal parts that go into her brew, shaking a rattle to awaken them from their slumber, and sometimes even bursting into dance to appease them and make them favor her. The powers that witch doctors revere are creatures of wild, ecstatic worship who demand dynamism from their servants.

The witch doctor's arcane magical art is formed from the ability to twist and turn nature through a crude yet effective science called juju. Often the more cunning and savvy members of the savage troll tribes, witch doctors are uncommon among other, more civilized races that instead rely on shamanistic or priestly aid in times of need. During war, the witch doctor's juju can give a troll tribe a needed edge.

The witch doctor's seething cauldron contains a hallucinogenic mixture of herbs, poisons, crushed insects and other noxious materials. He may add drops of this Shaka brew to improve the efficiency of any potion or alchemical item he creates. The Shaka brew maximizes all variable, numeric effects of the witch doctor's potions or alchemical creations. Drinking a potion treated with the Shaka brew leaves the imbiber with a euphoric buzz.

The Bambe brew is a secret recipe that extendes the effectiveness of magical potions. Drinking Bambe brew potions leaves the imbiber with a faint crawling sensation over their skin.

The witch doctor can add drops of the Zuvembi brew to any potion. The brew creates a powerful suggestive state in the imbiber that he can trigger and control. After drinking a Zuvembi brew potion, the imbiber can be dominated by the witch doctor.

Creating curses and hexes is a specialty of the witch doctor. The witch doctor can make a deadly doll of wax or tallow containing a specific person's hair, skin or blood. He can affect the target with a harmful touch attack spell as long as the person is on the same plane. The doll disintegrates after a touch attack.

The witch doctor can shake and rattle the gourds and necklaces that he carries to create a frightening rhythmic effect. The juju of the highly skilled witch doctor becomes potent enough to kill (the Death Rattle). The arcane focus required to use this ability is a death gourd, which must be cursed and carved by the witch doctor himself using bizarre and disgusting components. The witch doctor can rattle his death gourd, targeting a number of living creatures, the closest creatures are affected first.

- The Shadow Hunter

Of the highest authority of the jungle trolls are the shadow hunters, masters of voodoo magic. Their spirit powers both heal and curse, walking the line of dark and light in hope of saving the future of the jungle trolls. The dark gods will channel themselves through the shadow hunters when they use their ceremonial rush'kah masks.

Like other practitioners of voodoo, shadow hunters deal with the darker aspects of the spirit world. Unlike witch doctors and members of other professions associated with this ancient faith, shadow hunters claim to develop a special bond with voodoo spirits called the Loa. Able to channel the essence of some of these extremely potent beings - and often acting with their blessing - shadow hunters gain special abilities only the Loa can grant. As they grow in experience, the shadow hunters' bond with the Loa strengthens and their connection to these powerful voodoo spirits eventually gives them the ability to curse and heal at a whim.

Brave practitioners of rituals and dark rites, shadow hunters tread a cautious line between darkness and light. Often misunderstood but always respected by those who have witnessed their eerie powers, shadow hunters rely on faith in the Loa and the ability to communicate with them. Through the magic of prayer and ritual, a shadow hunter spends a lot of time maintaining the particular relationship he shares with the Loa.

Roughly spoken, shadow hunters are former headhunters who have gone deeply into the arts of voodoo and Loa. However, they have not forgotten their hunting skills, which makes a shadow hunter very dangerous in combat. They can stand far away from their enemies while throwing weapons at rapid speed, track down enemies with ease, and also heal themselves and allies. Shadow hunters can even use "pet-nakes" at the enemies. Of all trolls, shadow hunters are the most feared.

- The Hexer

All shaman and witch doctors know of ways to invoke spirits to do their bidding. The hexer takes this craft to a new level, calling the wrath of spirits down upon his enemies. With a dance and a chant, he weakens and debilitates his foes. If a particular enemy becomes troublesome, he can bind a hostile spirit into an idol, delivering a permanent curse.

Hexers attract spirits to do their bidding through the use of music, chants, dances, or other types of performance. Therefore a high skill in performance is desirable. The idols a hexer creates usually take the form of carvings or other types of figures, so some ability to craft is also necessary.

The hexer can invoke a hex chant. Although termed a “chant,” hex chants can involve ritual dance, hand motions and the like, they do not necessarily have to produce sound. A hex chant produces a supernatural effect on one or more creatures in an area, within a specified range around the hexer. The hexer can freely designate which targets are affected and which are not. He may include himself. A hexer can continue a hex chant as long as he is concentrating. A hexer can begin a new chant while the effects of an old one persist
.

- note at the bottom of the page -
Hmm...seems they didn't know too much about these, the entry is very short.

- Berserkers

Berserkers have had many strange abilities bestowed upon them that make them all but unstoppable in the heat of battle. Berserkers are hardier and stronger than most Trolls, effectively transforming them into a veritable whirling cyclone of death and destruction.

Jungle troll berserkers hail from the same ranks as the headhunters. These veteran soldiers, however, learn to channel their rage to become even more fearsome in combat. Troll berserkers often lead small bands of headhunters against the enemy, setting up ambushes or performing devastating raids against their foes. In battle, these elite combatants are even more fearsome than the dreadful headhunters.

One of the troll berserkers' favorite tactics is to hide in the undergrowth and catch their enemies by surpise. When a berserker works with a band of headhunters or other berserkers, they carefullly prepare lethal ambushes.

- The Barbarian

The barbarian is a ferocious warrior. He is uncivilized and brutal, relying on instincts, anger and raw physical might instead of tactics or fancy swordsmanship. His rage is frightening to behold, and it allows him to smash apart his enemies while ignoring all but the most brutal blows. He has a connection with nature's primal elements.

Troll barbarians devote their rage and strength to ranged weapons, flinging axes into their enemies with unerring speed. Perhaps the trolls' spirits look favorably on these warriors and enhance their abilities, for troll barbarians draw the magic of their weapons into their bodies and are able to impart it to other weapons.

- Headhunters

Trained from birth to track down and trap dangerous wild beasts, jungle trolls have long been renowned for their hunting and survival skills. The best among them are also cunning warriors able to fend for themselves against capable enemies.

Their superior tracking skills also make them tremendous scouting and reconnaissance experts as well as capable bounty hunters.

Note - I think i'm starting to see a pattern here...the more physical tribal roles do not seem to have been of as much interest to the shcolars as the Voodoo users and elementalists.

Those are nice, but I think we'll need to look for other things for the Heritage, if this is in reference to the discussion about everyone having a task in the guild. Being demilitarised and essentially living as settlers, we'll have need for people with much more mundane tasks. Farmer springs to mind, once the fields are done. Someone who tends to the animals (mainly the mounts, I imagine the guard kitties feed themselves), hunter as well as gatherer of wild plants for food and so on.
