Here is everything that I learned from the elders and from my troll sistas in Sen'jin about the traditional dance of the troll women . . .

Raks'bala

The traditional dance performed by female trolls has many names, the most common one is 'raks'bala'. The old Zandali word 'raks' means protect, guard or save. The word 'bala' may come from old Zandali words meaning either strength or child.

The exact origin of this dance is uncertain. Many believe that it was originally a religious dance performed by temple priestesses. Others say that the dance was a part of the traditional birthing ritual and was used to demonstrate or ease childbirth.

Whatever its origin, the raks'bala has traditionally been associated with the Goddess Hethiss, because the hypnotic nature of the dance is thought to represent the movements of a snake. The dance is also associated with the lesser loa Ezili, a loa of dancing and sensual love, who is also the protector of troll women and children.

Raks'bala is traditionally performed at any major social event, especially a celebration for victory in battle, a troll wedding or a birth. It is almost always accompanied by drumming.

Raks'bala consists of movements that are initiated by the feet and executed throughout the body. The focus of the dance is the pelvic and hip area. Most of the basic steps and techniques used in raks'bala are circular motions isolated in one part of the body, such as the hips or shoulders. The movements must be fluidly integrated with the rhythm of the drums.

Troll women are encouraged to practice raks'bala because it provides good exercise and helps increase both flexibility and strength, focusing on the muscles of the torso. Raks'bala also teaches the ability to move various muscles or muscle groups independently, which troll women know is useful for all sorts of activities . . .

The most skilful dancers can express their emotions through the dance, even though it is made up of simple movements. The dancer’s goal is to visually communicate to the audience the emotion and rhythm of the music.

Troll girls are usually taught the dance from an early age, but young dancers do not have enough life experience to project into their dancing. Raks'bala is a dance that celebrates the sensuality and power of being a mature troll woman.
